The History of Bergvliet Cape Town
The story of Bergvliet begins in 1685 when Governor Simon van der Stel was granted a farm and grazing rights on a vast estate he called Constantia. Van der Stel died in 1712, and four years later, in 1716, the executors of the estate divided the property into two portions Constantia and Bergvliet.
Between 1716 and 1769, several different persons held title to Bergvliet, but in 1769, Petrus Eksteen acquired the farm and erected the Bergvliet homestead in the vicinity of the perennial spring, Die Oog. In 1989, the homestead, Bergvliet Manor House, was proclaimed a National Monument, and today it has been declared a Provincial Heritage Site, Grade II.
The original farmhouse of Cape Dutch design still stands on a large property on the western border of Bergvliet. The Bergvliet Farm, as it is known, is a very beautiful place with a small natural pond which is also a tiny bird sanctuary. The farm is also a favorite dog walking and running location.
A Suburb for Returning Servicemen
In 1945, the Divisional Council of the Cape purchased Bergvliet for the purpose of providing a housing estate for ex-servicemen returning from World War II. The original farm was subdivided into smaller properties, and the first 100 houses were built for returning servicemen.
The Bergvliet of today comprises many lovely homes which have been modernised, open-planned and extended to make the most of Cape Town's superb summers. Many homes are set in lush established gardens with pools and play space for children.
Why Choose Bergvliet Cape Town?
Family-Friendly Living
Bergvliet is widely regarded as an ideal suburb for families. As one property specialist notes:
The suburb's spacious properties, excellent schools, and peaceful environment make it a top choice for young and growing families.
Erf Sizes
Bergvliet is characterised by large erven (800m² to 900m²) with mature trees and established gardens. These generous plot sizes are becoming increasingly rare in Cape Town's inner suburbs.
Affordability
Bergvliet is more affordable than its affluent neighbour Constantia, and than the busier Southern Suburbs closer to the CBD. It attracts people of all ages looking for a quiet home life.
Schools in Bergvliet Cape Town
One of the main reasons families choose the bergvliet is the quality of education. The suburb is home to three well-regarded schools, all built in the late 1940s and early 1950s:
| School | Type | Learners | Educator Ratio |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bergvliet High School | Public, Q5 | 1,067 | 18:1 |
| Bergvliet Primary School | Public, Q5 | 736 | 21:1 |
| Sweet Valley Primary School | Public, Q5 | 896 | 18:1 |
Sweet Valley zoning is highly prized and valued by residents, and can be the sole reason for stiff competition between purchasers when a home is put up for sale.

Die Oog Bird Sanctuary — A Unique Attraction
One of the unique attractions of Bergvliet is Die Oog Bird Sanctuary and Reserve. Die Oog is a natural spring, or 'eye,' built 250 years ago to supply the Bergvliet Farm with water.
The sanctuary is home to:
- Ducks, herons, kingfishers
- A major roosting site for Cattle Egret, Sacred Ibis, Hadeda Ibis and the Reed Cormorant
- A wet breeding area for the endangered Western Cape leopard toad
- Terrapins, tortoises and a water mongoose
Die Oog is a favourite for birdwatching, serene picnics by the dam, and even geo-caching. It is hoped that Die Oog will be proclaimed a formal Nature Reserve in the near future.
